Artemis co-founder John Dodd to retire after 25 years

John Dodd, the executive chairman and co-founder of fund house Artemis is retiring, having helped launch the firm in 1997.

Artemis said Dodd played a "huge part" in the growth and success of the firm over the past 27 years.

A spokesperson said: "He has been a key figure in helping shape the Artemis business, which today has assets under management of £25bn. We are grateful for everything he has contributed to the management and governance of the firm since our formation.

"John will leave Artemis in a great position to continue to deliver excellent investment performance and service for our clients.

"We would like to thank John for everything he has done during his time at Artemis and wish him the very best for a well-deserved retirement when the time comes.”

His responsibilities will be shared among the current Artemis management team.

Dodd cut his teeth in the industry at Ivory and Sime, where he was a UK smaller companies manager, and also managed smaller company funds at Artemis on helping to co-found that firm.

In recent years he has served as executive chairman of Artemis and sat on the management and executive committees. He is also a shareholder in the business.

Artemis is majority owned by the US asset management business Affiliated Managers Group, with the rest of the equity split between 30 partners, all of whom are current or former Artemis employees, of which one is Dodd.

He has kept his hand in on the fund management side by running the Artemis Alpha investment trust, a UK equity vehicle which has assets of about £120mn.

A stock exchange announcement this morning said of the future of this trust:  "Plans were announced this morning (September 2) to combine the assets of Artemis Alpha with those of the Aurora Investment Trust managed by Phoenix Asset Management Partners.

"Separate to this proposal, which is subject to shareholder approval, Kartik Kumar – co-manager of Artemis Alpha and manager of the Artemis European Select Fund – has accepted an offer from Phoenix to join its investment management team later in the year. Artemis plans to consult with investors in the Artemis European Select Fund on options for the fund."

The Artemis Alpha Trust moving to Phoneix Asset Management means Artemis will no longer be an investment trust provider.

Toby Gibb, head of investment solutions at Artemis said: "John was influential in persuading me to come here and his personality is in the DNA of the organisation.

"I came expecting an entrepreneurial culture and a firm razor-focused on delivering investment performance to clients. I’ve found that but have still been impressed by the strength and quality of the investment team, the degree of collaboration between managers and at how quickly decisions can be made and implemented here.

"That’s very much John’s personality and in attracting people who subscribe to that philosophy he has ensured that his legacy will have longevity.”
